Characteristics of Tepelena

The Municipality of Tepelena is bordered on the north by the Municipality of Memaliaj, on the east by the Municipality of Këlcyra, on the south by the Municipality of Gjirokastra and on the west by the Municipalities of Himara and Selenica. The capital of the Municipality is the city of Tepelena. This municipality consists of 4 administrative units: Tepelena, Center Tepelena, Lopa and Kurvelesh. Tepelena has a population of 8,949 inhabitants and covers an area of 431.24 km2 with a density of 12.1 inhabitants / km2.

Climate

The climatic conditions of this area are mainly classified in the Mediterranean hilly-mountainous climate. The influence of cyclonic and anticyclonic factors, geographical position and relief are some of the factors that play an important role in the Tepelena area.

Water resources

Surface waters are represented by those of the Vjosa River and its tributaries (Drino-Bençë-Luftinjë). Groundwater is represented by massive karst springs such as Cold Water Tepelena, Hormova, Lekel, Bença, Gurra in Progonat, Bambulli in Dukaj.

Vegetation of the area

The flora of the area consists of Mediterranean vegetation in its simplest form. Practically in this area in recent years there are displays of low flora, spontaneous herbaceous vegetation of the season, arable plants cultivated on agricultural land for animal feed and ornamental and fruit trees. The Tepelena area is rich in vegetation, both in species and in extent. In it are found from the belt of shrubs, which extends to a height of 600-800 meters, oak belt 800-1200 meters, deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests and up to alpine pastures with a height of over 1000 m. The area due to the special conditions of the atmospheric, climatic geological regime is relatively not very rich in vegetation. Flora and fauna form a highly creative ecological system with environmental values. Vegetation in the vertical alignment is heterogeneous starting with area vegetation such as rare willow (Salix) and short vegetation (Vitex Agrus Castus, Murizi), wild rose (Rosa Canina) herbaceous vegetation as abundant gram (Cynodon Dactylon), reed (Juncussp).
